Jerry Brown: Clinton Will Look Better After More Impeachments

One-time Democratic presidential hopeful Jerry Brown says that Bill
Clinton's impeachment will be no big deal to historians, especially "if we
get a couple more presidents impeached."

Brown, now mayor of Oakland, Calif., was grilled on the topic of Clinton's
legacy Thursday night by Fox News Channel's Laurie Dhue, who was filling in
on "The Edge with Paula Zahn."

DHUE: We know Bill Clinton is very concerned with his place in the history
books, particularly in his last term. What was his legacy and will the
history books remember him more for being impeached than anything else?

BROWN: Well, that's an easy footnote on his eight years. But I think....

DHUE: A footnote?

BROWN: Yeah, it will be a footnote. Look at history. Go back 50 years and
these things all fall into perspective. I think you can't say what the
legacy's going to be.... In 50 years, you don't know what will happen. There
could be global warming. There could be nuclear war. And all this stuff will
be trivial. So the context from history's point of view is not available for
our examination.

DHUE: That is true. But I would argue with you that it is not trivial that a
standing president of the United States was impeached. I would argue that,
that, perhaps, will be remembered more than NAFTA or welfare (reform).

BROWN: Well, it's memorable because it doesn't happen that often. But what
happens if we get a couple more presidents impeached? Then it will be no big
deal.

Brown may have a longer wait than he thinks. In America's 224 year history,
Clinton is the only elected president to have ever been impeached.
