World: China confirms six dead in police clash with Muslims

BEIJING (December 30, 2000 7:59 a.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) - China
confirmed Saturday that a violent confrontation this month between Muslims
and police in eastern China left six people dead 32 injured.
The Communist Party secretary, police chief and government head of Yangxin
county in Shandong province were dismissed after the Dec. 12 clashes, the
official Xinhua News Agency said. Prosecutors are investigating the incident
and those held responsible will be punished, it said.
The clashes were among the most serious involving China's Muslim Hui ethnic
minority in recent years.
Xinhua said several hundred Huis from Mengcun, a Hui-populated county in
neighboring Hebei province, traveled to Yangxin by bus on Dec. 12 and
clashed with police in Yangxin who were blocking the way. Six people were
killed and 32 injured, 13 of them police officers, Xinhua said. It did not
explain how the deaths and injuries occurred.
The report also did not say what sparked the clashes, but a human rights
group had said paramilitary police fired on Muslims who were protesting
after a pig's head was hung outside a mosque. Xinhua described the clashes
as an accident that violated official policies toward ethnic minorities and
"hurt Hui people's feelings."
