"……this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true
God, and Jesus Christ , whom thou hast sent.". (John 17:3)
MANY GODS AND LORDS:
"….we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and there is none
other God but one. For though there be that are called gods, whether in
heaven or in earth (as there be gods many and lords many), But to us
there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him;
and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge". (1 Corinthians 8:4-7)
The Apostle Paul wrote these words to His brethren in Christ, at
Corinth, a great city which was infamous in the Old World for sexual
immorality. The people of this city worshipped the idol-goddess Venus,
called Aphrodite by the Romans, and the one thousand 'priestesses' of
those gods, supposedly rewarded them with their favours!
At Ephesus Paul encountered the many-breasted 'Diana of the Ephesians'.
At Athens he found many altars to many gods, one of which was to "The
UnknownGod", (Acts 17:16-24). The Romans, the Greeks and other nations,
all had their own gods, but none of these 'gods' was able to deliver
their devotees from their sins or from death. Though writing by
inspiration of God, Paul also had first-hand experience of many of those
'called gods', and 'gods many and lords many'.
Paul was a Christian Jew and from his intimate knowledge of the Jewish
Scriptures, (which we know as the Old Testament), as well as by
inspiration of God, he could say, "but to us there is but one God, the
Father". From his encounter with the risen Lord Jesus on the road to
Damascus, he came to know Him as "Lord"….'Master or ruler'. (Acts
9:1-16)
Though the world of our day is quite different from that of the 1st.
century, yet spiritually, things are basically the same. Around the
world today, many 'gods' are still worshipped, immorality is still
rampant, many 'lords' are still acknowledged, and countless numbers of
people still think that their 'god', whether called the 'Trinity',
'Brahma', 'Allah', or whatever, is the only god.. But they do not know
the God whom the Lord Jesus called "My Father" and "the one true God".
THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE GOD:
The Lord Jesus and the Apostle Paul called "God", the "Father". (1 Cor.
8:7 John 17:3). Paul's words in Acts 17:17-34, attempted to correct the
false worship of the Athenians, who yet considered themselves to be very
'religious' and very wise. Paul's' words to the Athenians are still able
to correct the many false ideas about God which exist in our day.
God is called " The Father" because He created all things which have
their continued existence through His Spirit-Power. If He were to
withdraw His Spirit, His creative, sustaining power, and His breath,
everything would perish. We humans would immediately return to DUST.
(See Genesis 3:19; Ecclesiastes 3:20). God is our Creator and, "our
Father who art in heaven".
THE NAME OF GOD:
When God sent Moses to lead the Children of Israel out of Egypt, Moses
knew, because the Father had told, that they would ask him, "What is
God's Name"? Thus God revealed His Covenant Name as " I AM THAT I AM".
(Exodus 3:14). This translation has not adequately translated the Hebrew
word. 'EHYEH', the first person, imperfect (future continuous) tense of
the 'verb to be'. "I WILL BE" is a more accurate translation, as the
Revised Version 'note' suggests. God, who is Love, will continue always
to give of Himself to help and save others, especially His Covenant
people.
However, when Moses spoke about God, he must say," HE WILL BE", (Hebrew
YHWH, thought to be pronounced Yahweh). If it is asked, "What will God
be?", the answer is, "HE WILL BE the deliverer of His people, the
Children of Israel" (Exodus 3:8-10, 17). However, God's promises to
continually deliver Israel, His Covenant people, is only a part of His
larger plan to continually save all who trust Him. God's name promises
His continuing great work of manifesting Himself as a Saviour,
delivering without distinction all who put their faith and confidence in
Him.
God's Name not only promises to deliver the Jewish people. It promises
He would become a World-Savior. At the end of The Millennium, (See
Truth About The Millennium), God will save all nations and the earth
will be filled with the glory of God.( See Numbers 14:21; Hab. 2:14).
Through the Lord Jesus Christ and His glorified brethren, God will save
first Israel, His chosen and covenanted people, then all mankind, from
sin, disease and death. God's Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, will become
'the Saviour of all men, especially those that believe. ( Ex. 2:23-25,
3:8-12, 17; 1 Tim. 4:10). God's Name promises THE SALVATION OF ISRAEL
AND THE WORLD and that God will become Father of all nations. (See The
Truth About Jesus Christ.)
THE NATURE OF GOD:
God is a Spirit being and we are formed in His image. Spirit being is
the highest form of life and is called eternal or everlasting life.
(John 4-24). Because the Lord Jesus always obeyed the Father even unto
death upon the cross, God raised Him from the dead and gave Him eternal
life-- to have a spirit body like unto the angels and unto God Himself.
He also have Him great honour….(Philippians 2:8-11). The Lord Jesus
now possesses the same nature as His heavenly Father!
If we are faithful to God now, there is an assurance that at the
Resurrection, "this mortal must put on immortality".
(1 Corinthians 15:53). We have no form of immortality NOW!
THE CHARACTER OF GOD:
God's Name also contains a revelation of His just or righteous
character….." a just God and a Saviour……" (Isaiah 45:18-25). God
grants mercy to those worthy of mercy, and justice to those worthy of
justice. (Exodus 33:17-19; 34:5-7…Deuteronomy . 5:9,10). Paul
declares, " behold the goodness and severity of God". (Romans 12:22).
THE LORD JESUS MADE SAVIOUR BY GOD:
God has made the Lord Jesus "the Saviour of all men, especially of those
who believe". At His return to earth, the Lord Jesus will set up the
"kingdom of God" to replace and consume "all these kingdoms" (of
men).…(See Daniel 2:44; Micah 4:8; 1 Cor. 51:20-28). He will save the
world! God's salvation is available to us all by faith and baptism into
the Lord Jesus Christ.
