-Caveat Lector- http://leviathan.weblogs.com Isn't it odd how they are making all these statements publicly when their inquiry isn't even over? Makes you wonder how reliable it is. From http://www.independent.ie/2001/8/n08a.shtml IRA 'mole' allegation denied by top Garda inquiry Tom Brady, Security Editor A TOP level Garda investigation into allegations that the Provisional IRA had two "moles" operating within the force, which ultimately led to a dozen deaths, has found no evidence to substantiate the accusations. The probe, which should be completed within the next few weeks, involved extensive inquiries on both sides of the Border over the past eight months. A report of the findings will be submitted shortly to Garda Commissioner Pat Byrne who will then brief Justice Minister John O'Donoghue. The North's First Minister David Trimble created surprise in Government circles in Dublin at the weekend when he accused Taoiseach Bertie Ahern of "foot dragging" in investigatingthe "well documented" suggestions of Garda collusion with the IRA in a number of murders in south Armagh during the 1970s. The allegations had been levelled previously and found to be unsubstantiated but when they resurfaced last spring, Mr O'Donoghue ordered a fresh inquiry under the head of the national bureau of criminal investigation, Chief Supt Sean Camon and Det Insp Peter Kirwan, of the crime and security branch. The inquiry is understood to have included interviews with British journalist and author, Toby Harnden, who raised the allegations in his book, Bandit Country, a Dublin-based journalist who repeated the allegations and former members of the gardai. With the help of the RUC, inquiries were also carried out across the Border while detectives trawled records and files on the murders in which the two alleged moles were claimed to have been involved. One of the two men at the centre of the allegations was named in the British House of Commons last year. The two, who have been retired for some time, were under suspicion in the past of being involved in criminal activities but were not linked to the passing of information to the IRA. One of the incidents at the centre of the allegations is the murders of two senior RUC officers, Chief Supt Harry Breen and Supt Bob Buchanan as they were returning across the Border after attending a meeting in Dundalk garda station. Gardai found the officers regularly used the same route for their meetings. In the case of Lord Chief Justice Maurice Gibson and his wife, Cecily, killed as they travelled across the Border at Killeen in April, 1987, gardai determined that the IRA found out about his travel arrangements after he booked a holiday in his own name.
