Suspect May Be Schizophrenic

Four days after UNC law student Wendell Williamson was charged with two
counts of first-degree murder, three UNC psychology professors who have
experience with the criminally insane said Williamson's actions might
indicate that he suffered from schizophrenia.
Williamson was taken into custody Thursday. Police say he fired his
father's M-1 rifle at pedestrians and police officers and killed two men
on Henderson Street in Chapel Hill at about 2 p.m. Thursday.
His mother, Fonda Williamson of Clyde, N.C., said a forensic
psychiatrist told her Saturday that her son suffered from paranoid
schizophrenia. Although she said her son had been hospitalized for
psychiatric care in the past, Saturday was the first time she had heard
him diagnosed as schizophrenic, according to the AP.
Joe Lowman, a UNC abnormal psychology professor, said Williamson may be
classified as an extroverted schizophrenic paranoid. Most schizophrenics
are shy and keep to themselves. Williamson, however, was fairly outgoing
for a schizophrenic, Lowman said.George Baroff, director of the UNC
Developmental Disabilities Training Institute, said schizophrenics often
heard voices in their heads or had auditory hallucinations. Williamson
is reported to have talked to himself at several bars. He has also been
reported to believe he had telepathic powers.
