Curiously, the number of wealthy, slave-owning plantation owners
in the Old South was relatively few--as with any "aristocracy.".
Many--if not most--of those who are now running around waving the
Confederate flag and pining for those Dear Old Days are not the
heirs of that wealthy few. They are folks who descend from
merchants and shopkeepers and on down the ladder to poor white
farmers and sharecroppers too poor to own slaves, struggling to
hold on to a mule and a piece of land.
What those great-great-grandsons of poor whites and
sharecroppers really want is someone below them on the social
ladder so they don't have to feel that they're the bottom of the
barrel. That's where the Negro/African-American comes in. That's
where he has a function....a dog to kick, as it were.
Humans seem to love hierarchy (is it hardwired into the system?)
Like a flock of chickens, all those great-great-grandchildren of poor
southern white folks just don't want to see themselves at the low
end of the pecking order. And now, at the very highest reaches of
our government, we have a pack of men who not only understand
but share their pain.
