She was a fairly reclusive person, and had had threats, so most people seemed to assume she was in hiding. A witness at the murder trial claimed to have seen her in Eastern Europe (presumably he was mistaken). There was even an article in Steamshovel I think (or maybe Paranoia) suggesting she might be hiding out with Larry Flynt working on some project.
