Namely, what's the difference between "hoof and mouth" and "foot and mouth" disease? A spokesman for the USDA told WorldNetDaily yesterday that the department had received "several calls" asking the same question. "The difference is as great as that which exists between the left hoof and the right hoof" on livestock, he said. "In short, none." The preferred usage today is "foot and mouth disease," with the "differences" in terminology being attributable to regional variation. According to Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga., the "disease is a severe, highly contagious viral disease of wild and domestic animals. It primarily affects cattle and pigs, but infections can also occur in sheep, deer, and other cloven-hooved animals." The CDC said the occurrence of the disease in the U.S. was rare; it has not been seen since 1929. But because of the European outbreak, which began in Great Britain but has since spread to France, the Bush administration has ordered Europeans entering the U.S. to undergo special inspections and decontamination. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, a total of 322 confirmed cases of foot-and-mouth have been identified in Britain as of Sunday. One case has shown up in Northern Ireland.
