'PEACEMAKER' BILL MET BY N.Y. PROTEST

Bill Clinton accepted a peace award from Cardozo Law School
yesterday - while protesters outside questioned his status as a
disgraced lawyer and chanted, "Where's the peace" [in Israel]?

The Advocate for Peace award given to Clinton by two student
groups for diplomacy in the Middle East, Northern Ireland and the
Koreas set off a firestorm of controversy at Cardozo, Yeshiva
University's law school.

"He is a bad role model for law students. It's hypocritical for a
law school that teaches ethics to give someone like him an
award," said Darian Taylor, noting that Clinton lost his law
license for five years after admitting to misleading a grand jury
about the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

And about a dozen pro-Israel protesting students said Clinton
deserves no peace award.

Protester Isaac Yedid said he visited Israel two weeks ago. "It's
not calm and peaceful there," he said.

The protesters charged that Clinton pressured ousted Prime
Minister Ehud Barak to make unrealistic land concessions to the
Palestinians - and things blew up.

Student organizer Matthew Seidner defended honoring Clinton.
"He's getting the award for being an advocate for peace, not a
guarantor of peace," Seidner said.

"You have to show appreciation for effort," said student Alyson
Sprafkin.

"I was very honored, very honored," the former president said
after accepting the award and giving a speech to students and
faculty in an event closed to the media.

Clinton told the packed crowd of 350 in the law school lounge
that people have to "let go of their anger" to forge peaceful
compromise, adding that peace cannot be a "zero-sum game" with
winners and losers, audience members related.

"Nobody has a monopoly on the truth," he said.

By and large, Clinton receive a hero's welcome, with many
students and faculty saying he gave a powerful, compelling
speech.

Cardozo officials stressed that the award was sanctioned not by
the law school, but the students.

"We're not sponsoring the event," said law school dean Paul
Verkuil, who acknowledged getting angry e-mails and telephone
calls from alumni. "My job is to protect, not to endorse,
students' awards. The institution's role is to provide students
the opportunity to give the award. This is a place where debate
should be encouraged. Controversy is not a stranger to a law
school. It shouldn't be."

Last night, Clinton headed for Harlem - site of his planned
offices - for a private soul-food dinner at Sylvia's to, the
restaurant said, "get acquainted with his new Harlem neighbors."
