-Caveat Lector-
I wish I knew the truth about whether protecting these
forests causes the deadwood, etc. to ignite creating the
terrible fires of the last few years. There are more trees
now than when settlers from the Old World arrived so I do
not think there is over-cutting of the forests but it is the
wildlife habitat that concerns me. It is a shame the timber
cannot be harvested in a more responsible manner than large
companies now use. If it were done correctly with a minimum
of disturbance of species not being harvested instead of
massive clear-cutting of everything, it would satisfy those
of both lines of thought. That, however, is not the
profitable way to do it.
It can be done in a fairly responsible manner, however,
leaving other trees in place because I see it done all
around me by logging crews working for Mead Paper when they
go onto private property and do this logging. Mead pays the
owners but is still not allowed to devastate the property
and often agrees to replant, etc. I guess some of the
problem comes about when there is a single-species Forrest
instead of the variety of these natural forests. It just
seems there should be middle ground between the deadwood
fires of the last few summers and total destruction of the
forest land.
