-Caveat Lector- WJPBR Email News List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Peace at any cost is a Prelude to War! Three Injured in California High School Shooting Thursday, March 22, 2001 E-mail This Story Gunfire erupted at a California high school for the second time in less than three weeks and as many as three people were reported shot and wounded. A suspect was in custody and was being taken to a hospital, police said. Two adults had minor injuries, police also said. "My information right now is that no one was seriously injured," said Granger Ward, superintendent of Grossmont Union High School District. "The school is locked down and they are going room by room to bring them out and evacuate the school. There may be some superficial injuries." Television news reported that an 18-year-old was in custody after shots were heard at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, Calif. The suspect was taken to a hospital with pellet wounds. He was not a student, although he may have graduated last year. News reports also said a 16-year-old who had been shot in the chest. The wounds appeared to be shotgun pellets. Both of the victims were conscious. Local news reports said two teachers may have been among the wounded. Police cordoned off the area surrounding the school and TV footage of the scene showed students being evacuated after the midday shooting amid confusion over the circumstances of the gunfire. Witnesses told KFMB-TV that the suspect, armed with a rifle and handgun, was wrestled to the ground by police. Television news reports also said police called SWAT teams to the neighborhood to search for possibly a second suspect. The shooting at Granite Hills was reported at 12:54 p.m. Granite Hills High, with 2,900 students, is just four miles south of Santana High School in Santee, where two students were killed and 13 other people were wounded on March 5. Both schools are in the same district 17 miles east of San Diego. Ryan Carrillo, a sophomore at the school, told KGTV-San Diego that he heard gunshots as he walked to a bathroom near the office. "It sounded like an explosion, like in a chemistry class or something," he said of the first two shots he heard. After hearing five more shots, he ran out of the school and into a nearby park. Students hugged and cried as they gathered in a park near the Granite Hills campus. Many parents ran about searching for their children. *COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U. S. C.
