massacre seems an enormous, albeit+ADw-BR+AD4-effective, hoax perpetrated by the Kosovo
Liberation Army to persuade+ADw-BR+AD4-the U.S. and NATO to attack the Serbs. The goal
was independence for+ADw-BR+AD4-Kosovo, possibly leading to the dream of a Greater
Albania.+ADw-BR+AD4APA-BR+AD4-We now have a far better idea of what really happened at Racak -
a+ADw-BR+AD4-pre-crisis town of 2,000 and a stronghold of KLA agitation. By+ADw-BR+AD4-January,
1999, most of its population had fled to a nearby town,+ADw-BR+AD4-Stimlje, leaving
perhaps 400 people behind. When four Serbian+ADw-BR+AD4-policemen were ambushed and
murdered in two separate incidents in a+ADw-BR+AD4-week, Serb security forces surrounded
Racak and attacked. The Serbs+ADw-BR+AD4-tipped off foreign journalists who came to see.
Fighting was savage+ADw-BR+AD4-and brief, not only in town but in the
countryside.+ADw-BR+AD4APA-BR+AD4-Journalists found Racak had few people actually living
there.+ADw-BR+AD4APA-BR+AD4-Some 20 bodies were counted. Serbs and journalists left at dusk.

it seems that all the KLA killed fighting in the+ADw-BR+AD4-area - 45 of them - were
dumped in a gully at Racak and journalists+ADw-BR+AD4-and the OSCE investigators invited
to see what was described as the+ADw-BR+AD4AIg-massacre+ACI- of unarmed
civilians.+ADw-BR+AD4APA-BR+AD4-Military insignia and/or badges had been removed from
clothing,+ADw-BR+AD4-military gear replaced by civilian clothing. No weapons were in
+ADw-BR+AD4-sight.+ADw-BR+AD4-The hoax was on. William Walker was first on the scene and
believed+ADw-BR+AD4-what he saw and was told. The international press relayed his
outrage+ADw-BR+AD4-to the world.+ADw-BR+AD4APA-BR+AD4-Forensic evidence showed - as the Finnish team
has since confirmed -+ADw-BR+AD4-that most of the 45 Racak dead had been shot at long
range, not+ADw-BR+AD4-execution-style. Corpses tested positive with residue of gunpowder
on+ADw-BR+AD4-their hands, indicating they had been firing weapons. No ammunition
+ADw-BR+AD4-or+ADw-BR+AD4-shell casings were found near the bodies, where they had
supposedly+ADw-BR+AD4-been massacred, nor were there pools of blood.+ADw-BR+AD4APA-BR+AD4-BODIES
MOVED+ADw-BR+AD4APA-BR+AD4-Pathologists also found the 45 dead men had all been shot in
+ADw-BR+AD4-different+ADw-BR+AD4-parts of the body, from different directions, indicating a
