Clinton Victims Sue IRS Over Retaliatory Audits
When Richard Nixon was accused of using the IRS to attack his enemies,
the press said it was perhaps the worst abuse of presidential power in
American history.
But despite a string of blatantly political audits targeting witnesses
who blew the whistle on Bill Clinton's personal and political thuggery,
the press and numerous official investigators sat on their hands for
years.
America's delinquent journalist class will likely give this bit of news
the same back of the hand treatment as well. But in truth it deserves
front page headlines.
Judicial Watch has stepped in where Congress, several independent
counsels and the media have failed to act.
On Tuesday the legal watchdog group sued the IRS on behalf of several of
the witnesses who put their careers, and in some cases their lives, on
the line when they crossed Bill and Hillary Clinton in order to tell the
truth.
Clinton Sexgate witnesses Juanita Broaddrick, Gennifer Flowers, Liz
Ward Gracen and Paula Jones were all the highly improbable targets of
Clinton tax audits. So was Billy Dale, who was steamrollered by
Hillary's Travelgate putsch.
And Chinagate whistleblower Johnny Chung, perhaps the most important
cooperating witnesss in the most serious scandal in American history,
was also subject to IRS harassment.
The Clinton-friendly media said it was all just one big coincidence.
But Judicial Watch - along with anybody in possession of an ounce of
common sense - believes otherwise.
On behalf of Broaddrick, Flowers, Dale and Chung, as well as recent
Judicial Watch addition Russell Verney, formerly of Ross Perot's United
We Stand, and the Western Journalism Center's Joseph Farah, the legal
watchdog group has filed suit against the IRS and its commissioner,
Charles Rossotti - a Clinton appointee who remains at his post three
months into the Bush administration.
The lawsuit seeks the release of documents that the plaintiffs believe
will show the political nature of the audits in question, information
that the IRS has thus far refused to hand over.
Last year the Landmark Legal Foundation ran into similar IRS
stonewalling when it requested notes and other evidentiary material that
could have shown politically motivated misconduct. Landmark's case is
still percolating in the courts.
In the end, none of the nation's law enforcement agencies,
congressional and judicial checks and balances, or fourth estate
freedoms did anything to stop the Clintons' reign of IRS terror and
intimidation. It was left to two private law firms with minimal
resources and no enforcement power to wage the battle.
That's a story that should rate headline coverage indeed.
