Wednesday April 25 11:26 AM ET Bush Pledges to Stand 'Steadfast' by Taiwan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) pledged on Wednesday the United States would help Taiwan defend itself against China but said he hoped Taipei and Beijing will resolve their differences peacefully. In a Reuters interview, Bush said he would uphold the spirit of the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act and left it ambiguous whether the United States would intervene militarily in any conflict between Taiwan and China. Earlier Bush has indicated he was taking a more overt stand toward defending Taiwan militarily when, asked in an interview with ABC television whether commitment to defending Taiwan meant invoking the full force of the U.S. military, he said: ''Whatever it took to help Taiwan defend theirself.'' He told Reuters in the Oval Office: ``We'll help Taiwan defend herself. And people have got to understand, that's the spirit and they can surmise what they want to. They've just got to understand our country will stand steadfast by them.''
