-Caveat Lector- http://allafrica.com/stories/200104260062.html Clinton Steals the Show At African Aids Summit Panafrican News Agency (Dakar) April 26, 2001 Posted to the web April 26, 2001 Segun Adeyemi Abuja, Nigeria Making his second visit to Nigeria in nine months, but this time as a private citizen, former US President Bill Clinton stole the show at the opening session of the African AIDS Summit in Abuja Thursday, attracting the loudest ovation from the crowd. Apparently impressed with Clinton's larger-than-life image and his support for Africa over the years, the crowd applauded him as he walked into the cavernous Abuja International Press Centre venue of the Summit, organised by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and hosted by the Nigerian government to forge a continental response to the scourge of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and other related infectious diseases. Clinton, invited to the Summit by President Olusegun Obasanjo during his last trip to Nigeria in August 2000, walked in alongside former Ghanaian President Jerry Rawlings, and later joked about it when he said the two represented the group of "has beens" at the conference. Saying he "proudly acknowledge I have loved Africa so well," the former US President said: "I am here because I care about Africa and I care about AIDS." Addressing several African leaders gathered at the Summit, he said: "Today the world looks to Africa for leadership not just to safe your own people but to show the world how to save theirs." He recounted the grim data of HIV/AIDS infection in Africa, which includes that 24.5 million of the 36 million people infected world-wide are from the continent, and the "economic tragedy" posed by the disease. Clinton recalled that his administration declared AIDS a national security issue because of the enormity of the problem, and said that though the administration was ridiculed then, it had been proven right as the epidemic had assumed a global dimension. Referring to Africa as the origin of humanity, Clinton told the Summit: "The place where humanity began is being given the chance to safe humanity." The US government's delegation to the Summit is led by Nancy Powell, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, after Secretary of State Colin Powell failed to make it to the meeting for reasons not unconnected with the presence of Libyan leader Moammar Kadhafi. --------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 2001 Panafrican News Agency.
