It had to do with land masses being shifted out of the artic circle region (or in the case of Anartica, being shifted more into the anartic circle region). More and more scientific findings are coming to align with catastrophism as the explanation of the most interesting features of Earth's geography and geology -- not gradualism. The build up of CO2 gases and normal global warming theory are theories stemming from the paradigm of gradualism.
