Young, Staff Writer May 17, 2001, 7:23 p.m. PDT SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- It's estimated that more than 80 books have been written about the O.J.Simpson murder trial and the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Now there's a new book, but with a different twist on what happened on the night of the murders. William Dear, a private investigator, has come up with a new theory about who might have killed Simpson's ex-wife and her boyfriend, and according to the author, O.J. was not directly involved in the crime. In his book O.J. Is Guilty, But Not of Murder, Dear suggests that Simpson was covering up for someone from the time that the bodies were discovered. "I believe that his son, Jason, should have been a major suspect at the time," Dear told CBS 2 News in an exclusive interview this week. According to Dear, Jason Simpson's alibi of where he was and what he was doing on the night of the murders was weak. Moreover, Dear said, the junior Simpson had a history of mental problems that should not have been ignored by detectives. "We talked to a number of people who described Jason as having a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality," Dear told CBS 2 News. "One moment he'd be the nicest guy in the world; the next minute, an entirely different person." Dear said that Jason may have felt rage against his stepmother, Nicole Brown Simpson, because she failed to meet with him as promised on that fateful night in June 1994. After attending a dance recital involving her then-6-year-old daughter Sydney, Nicole went out to eat, instead of stopping by the restaurant where Jason Simpson worked, according to Dear. That unintended slight, Dear alleges, may have triggered a violent response from the junior Simpson, whose mental state the author described as questionable at the time. To illustrate what was possibly going through the young man's mind, Dear relied on a letter that he said Jason Simpson wrote to himself: "Dear Jason, I am three people. I know what I need to do, but I haven't got guts enough to do it. "Alcohol and drugs have been the root of all my problems. Walking on broken glass." In his book, Dear stops short of saying that Jason Simpson was responsible for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. However, the author told CBS 2 News that witnesses claim to have seen the young man toting around a satchel full of knives on the night that the victims were killed. CBS 2 News tried to contact the Simpson family and the Los Angeles Police Department for responses to Dear's theory. But neither chose to issue statements. Copyright 2001 by Channel 2000.
