Israelis Fire Rockets on Stations
By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH, Associated Press Writer

NABLUS, West Bank (AP) - Israeli helicopters rocketed Palestinian security
headquarters in two West Bank towns Saturday in a second day of air strikes
to retaliate for a suicide bombing at an Israeli shopping mall.

No one was killed in the raids, but three Palestinians were killed Saturday
from what witnesses said was live Israeli army fire in three separate
incidents. Sporadic clashes were reported throughout the West Bank and Gaza
Strip.

The helicopter raids came a day after 12 Palestinians were killed in a
warplane attack on Palestinian cities. Friday's attack was Israel's harshest
response yet in eight months of fighting and marked the first time since the
1967 Mideast war that the Jewish state attacked Palestinian targets with
warplanes.

Yasser Arafat, arriving for an Arab League meeting in Cairo, told reporters
that Palestinians would not back down.

``We will not give in. We will go on, God willing, until we pray together''
in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Palestinian leader said, referring to the Islamic
shrine in east Jerusalem where Palestinians aspire to create the capital of
their future state.

On Saturday, helicopter gunships attacked security installations in the West
Bank towns of Jenin and Tulkarem, witnesses said. The Jenin compound was hit
by eight rockets, and black smoke rose into the sky.

Some 30 people were injured in Tulkarem, one seriously. No one was hurt in
the Jenin strike, which targeted offices of Arafat's elite guard, Force 17,
and intelligence forces.

The army said it struck ``terrorist targets'' that included command posts of
Palestinian security forces.

``The army will continue to fight Palestinian terror, in every way and at any
time that it will find appropriate,'' an army spokesman said in a news
release.

In Tulkarem, the air raid targeted three buildings, severely damaging them.
The charred remains of seven police pickup trucks smoldered in the parking
lot outside the security compound after the strike.

One missile intended for Tulkarem fell from a helicopter into Israeli
territory near the communal farm of Bahan, but no injuries were reported,
military officials said on condition of anonymity.

A Palestinian was killed Saturday in the West Bank town of Nablus when
Israeli troops fired live rounds at some 700 protesters after the funerals
for 11 Palestinians killed in an air strike on Friday, witnesses and doctors
said. The army accused the Palestinians of firing live bullets and said it
used only rubber bullets in the clash.

Near Jenin, a Palestinian policeman manning a checkpoint was killed by
assailants shooting from a passing car that then sped away in the direction
of Israel, Palestinian officials said. The army said Israeli soldiers were on
a mission and opened fire when three Palestinian policemen approached their
vehicle.

In the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian farmer was killed by Israeli fire near the
Karni crossing with Israel, Palestinian witnesses said. The army said
soldiers shot a Palestinian carrying a weapon in his leg when he ignored
warnings shots in the air.

In the West Bank city of Ramallah, at least 12 Palestinians were injured in
an exchange of fire after Israeli troops fired rubber bullets against
demonstrators throwing stones following a funeral for one of the victims of
Friday's air strike.

Four mortar shells fell near the Jewish settlement of Gadid in the Gaza Strip
on Saturday, the army said. No injuries were reported. Israel has retaliated
harshly for such shellings in the past.

In all, 469 people have been killed on the Palestinian side and 84 on the
Israeli side since fighting erupted in September.

In Nablus, tens of thousands of Palestinians clamored for revenge on Saturday
as they buried the 11 police officers killed a day earlier.

``A million martyrs will march toward Jerusalem,'' the crowd chanted as
dozens of gunmen fired in the air. Others shouted for revenge.

The procession was led by police pickup trucks carrying the flag-draped
bodies of the victims, members of the Palestinian police whose compound was
struck by two powerful rockets fired from F-16 warplanes.

In all, 12 Palestinians were killed in Friday's attacks on Nablus and
Ramallah. Warplanes also struck Palestinian coast guard offices and security
installations in the Gaza Strip and in Tulkarem.

An additional seven people were killed Friday: the Palestinian attacker and
five Israelis in the suicide bombing in the Israeli coastal town of Netanya;
and an Israeli motorist shot in a West Bank roadside ambush. In all, 72
Israelis and 65 Palestinians were wounded Friday.

The Islamic resistance movement Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack
in Netanya.

Israel holds Arafat responsible for more than a dozen bombings that have
killed 22 Israelis in the past eight months. Israel says Arafat's security
forces have done nothing to stop militants behind the bombings.

Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said Saturday that Israel was still
striving for peace and had no choice but to respond to attacks.

``If there won't be an initiation, there won't be an Israeli attack,'' Peres
said in a release.
