Gray Davis' Energy Crisis Hit Men Trained by Hillary
Two top Democratic Party operatives currently trying to pin blame for
the California energy crisis on President Bush got their start in the
political big leagues working for former first lady Hillary Clinton in
the Clinton White House counsel's office.
Chris Lehane and Mark Fabiani, who, according to the Washington Times,
are now raking in $30,000 a month heading up California governor Gray
Davis' campaign to lay responsibility for his state's energy woes at
Bush's feet, were in fact Mrs. Clinton's lead Whitewater shock troops.
Fabiani became the Clinton administration's de facto scandal press
secretary, feverishly spinning reports on Hillary's involvement in the
Travelgate scandal and the cover-up of Vince Foster's 1993 death.
Typical of Fabiani's audacious style was an episode in 1995, when
investigators uncovered damning notes in Foster's diary that said
Whitewater was "a can of worms we shouldn't open." Rather than
acknowledge that the statement begged further investigation, Fabiani
dismissed the dead lawyer's words out of hand.
Lehane went even further, preparing on Mrs. Clinton's orders one of the
most bizarre pieces of propaganda ever produced by the scandal-plagued
White House.
Lehane's 331-page "Communication Stream of Conspiracy Commerce" focused
on reports about Foster's death. Written in 1995, it zeroed in on two
reporters - Christopher Ruddy, now NewsMax.com executive editor, and
Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, then Washington bureau chief of the London
Sunday Telegraph - trying to show they were financed by a right-wing
conspiracy.
Three years later, Mrs. Clinton would publicly blame reports of her
husband's philandering on a "vast right-wing conspiracy."
Perhaps it's no accident that Gray Davis' Clinton-trained attack dogs
are now borrowing a page from their old Whitewater playbook and trying
to blame California's energy problems on a vast oil industry conspiracy.
