{{My, talk about a revisionist version! No mention of the
alcohol and pills in this particular article but that was a
factor in her hospitalization also. I did not know, however,
that her mother had also been hospitalized for mental illness.

Like Mother, Like Daughter (Tipper and Karenna Gore:
Interview)

Ladies Home Journal (back)
Author/s: Diana Mclellan
Issue: Nov, 1999 (partial reprint)

Tipper suspected she was clinically depressed. It was a
condition she'd seen up-close and personal as a child, when
her own mother was hospitalized, for serious bouts of
depression. Partly because of that, she'd studied mental
health in college, going on to earn her master's degree.

When she told her husband and children that she needed help,
"everybody was supportive," she says. But shame, silence and
stigma have always surrounded mental illness. Today, Tipper
still seems to feel this way. Even though she heads the White
House campaign on mental health, she sidesteps any specifics
about her symptoms or treatment.

"There's a clinical checklist for depression," she says
carefully. "It includes changes in eating and sleeping
patterns, changes in behavior, becoming withdrawn. Generally
speaking, if several of those things apply to you for more
than two weeks at a time, it's recommended that you consult a
mental-health professional."

Given her mother's history with the illness, does Tipper
believe depression might have a hereditary component?

"I don't think the studies are definitive enough on that yet,"
she says. "But we're closer to scientific knowledge of genetic
markers for all kinds of illnesses--cancer, diabetes,
Parkinson's and many psychological disorders."
