In trying to build up the image of George W. Bush as a seasoned world
traveler, his aides have disclosed that the president made a business trip
to Guatemala sometime in the past. The aides offered no details, listing
Guatemala simply as one of the handful of countries Bush had visited prior
to becoming president. The aides described the purpose of the trip as
"business."

Though it's not clear how significant this business trip was, Guatemala
has been the site of some of the world's worst human rights abuses over
the past half century, with some 200,000 people killed. In the 1980s, the
Reagan-Bush administration defended Guatemala's right-wing military
government as it conducted what has been called a genocide against Mayan
Indians living in the highlands.
