North Korean military's brewery may be for biological weapons U.S. intelligence agencies are focusing on the construction of a brewery by the military in North Korea because of the similarities between brewing and developing biological weapons. Officials said the Taedonggang Brewery will have a floor space of ten of thousands of square meters and is being built in Pyongyang by soldiers of the Korean People’s Security Forces — North Korea’s internal political police. North Korea has pursued a research and development program related to biological warfare capabilities for at least 30 years. According to a Pentagon report on proliferation, its resources, including a biotechnical infrastructure, “are sufficient to support production of limited quantities of infectious biological warfare agents, toxins, and possibly crude biological weapons.” “North Korea has a wide variety of means available for military delivery of biological warfare agents,” the report said. Some intelligence officials believe North Korea would resort to biological weapons on its long- and medium-range missiles in a conflict to make up for its lack of nuclear warheads. |
