Police Told Cops He Rejected Intern: Report

WASHINGTON--Rep. Gary Condit told police an "obsessed" Chandra Levy became
distraught when he broke off their relationship two days before she
vanished, Fox News reported last night.
But the California congressman's spokesman bitterly disputed the account.
"That report is absolutely, factually wrong," said Condit's chief of staff,
Mike Lynch. "It's invented out of whole cloth. It's totally out of sync
with what happened."
A Washington police spokesman would not confirm or deny the new account of
Condit's hour-long police interview Saturday. Fox stood by its story.
Fox quoted police sources as saying that Condit, without admitting an
affair, told detectives that he broke off his "close friendship" with Levy
on April 29.
Condit told police the 24-year-old intern was extremely upset and called
him several times on April 30, but he did not return the calls, Fox
reported.
Levy vanished the next morning after sending her mother a 10:45 a.m.
e-mail about airline ticket prices. She was never heard from again.
Levy's family says she had told them she was having an affair with Condit,
and they suspect he knows more than he has said about her disappearance.
They have hired a lawyer and investigative team to hunt for clues.
Condit has repeatedly denied through aides that he was romantically
involved with Levy.
Lynch said Condit lawyer Abbe Lowell, who sat in on the congressman's
police interview, assured him Condit never discussed breaking off a
relationship and never described Levy as distraught or obsessed.
"Either the police sources or the reporter were smoking something that was
probably illegal," Lynch said.
Condit's spokesman and lawyer would not reveal what he did say.
Far from distraught, Levy appeared to be chatty and in fine spirits before
she disappeared, according to a witness who saw her the evening after the
alleged confrontation.
"She was excited about going home to California," said one staff member at
the Washington Sports Club, where Levy went to cancel her membership at
7:30 p.m. on April 30. "That's why the suggestion of suicide always
baffled me. She seemed to have way too much going on."
Police trying to nail down Levy's last movements are seeking to interview
Condit's wife, Carolyn, who arrived in Washington on a rare visit to the
capital on April 28.
Meanwhile, investigators are quietly sifting through Condit's personal
life.
The FBI in Seattle has interviewed a United Airlines flight attendant, who
told them she ended a year-long romance with Condit after reports surfaced
linking Levy to the congressman. She said Condit had told her he was
separated.
The flight attendant is upset because her roommates sold her confidences to
the Star supermarket tabloid for $2,500, said her lawyer, Jim Robinson of
Seattle.
"My client is not a public figure. She is a private individual and intends
to remain so," he said, declining to comment further.
