KELLY PARDONGATE: Denise Rich has a publisher for her life story. DENISE Rich - the songwriting socialite and Democratic fund-raiser at the center of Bill Clinton's Pardongate scandal - has finally found a publisher for her life story: Capital Publishing, a little-known Washington, D.C., house. There is no advance money involved, leading industry sources to conclude that she was stymied in her bid to find a big-name outlet to pick up her memoir. Instead, Rich's agent, Washington lawyer Ron Goldfarb, says the deal will be a "partnership" between author and publisher. Rich is believed to be ready to spend up to $500,000 to get the book onto shelves by footing the bill for big-name celebrity bio writer Laura Morton to collaborate with her. Morton, who wrote "Ringmaster" with Jerry Springer, has also collaborated with Joan Lunden on two health books and was the co-author with singer Melissa Etheridge on her bestselling autobiography, "The Truth Is . . . : My Life in Love and Music." Under the deal, the publisher is expected to pay only for the costs of printing, distribution and some shared marketing costs. "We think this will be the more lucrative way to publish it," said Goldfarb, who expects a first printing of "a least 50,000 copies." Originally, Simon & Schuster was close to inking her in April to a mid-six figure contract, but backed away after she began hitting the TV talk-show circuit. Publishing maverick Lyle Stuart, head of Barricade Books, also discussed doing the book - but he and Rich could not come to terms. "We were offered a deal and tentatively accpeted, but we had second thoughts," said Stuart. "We said, 'Who cares what she says.' It's all part of the passing parade." Goldfarb disputes that account, however. Rich's ex-husband, Marc Rich, had been living on the lam in Switzerland while eluding attempts by the feds to have him extradicted to the U.S. on tax evasion and other charges. She lived with him on the lam for a while before splitting and returning to the U.S. and suffering through an acrimonious divorce. In the waning days of the Clinton Administration, she says, she put aside her personal bitterness about her ex and asked Clinton to pardon him for the sake of their childern. It created a tidal wave of bad publicity for the Clintons and legal probes of all the players involved in the Pardongate mess. Goldfarb says he expects the Rich book to be out in April 2002.
