Matalin Said to Be on the Outs With Bush Insiders
"George W. Bush's tight-lipped band of Texans is sharpening its knives for
Mary Matalin, the controversial counselor to Vice President Dick Cheney,"
reports the Washingtonian Online.
In a story headlined "Texas Posse Wants Cheney to Give Matalin the Boot,"
WO says she has "always been suspect" among Bush's team and that Dubya "had
to be talked into letting her join" the White House staff.
Bush also reportedly believes that Matalin let his father down in his 1992
race against Bill Clinton.
Say what?
It was Matalin who first red-flagged a Clinton campaign memo warning that
the slippery Democrat had 19 potential "bimbo eruptions" waiting to
detonate around the country.
Bush Sr.'s inner circle of country club Republicans thought Matalin's
attention to the issue was tacky and ill-advised, even though she'd
collected more than a few distressed accounts from various women who said
they'd been threatened into silence.
Matalin was nearly fired for her foresight back then, only to be rescued at
the last minute with a very public acknowledgment of gratitude from Bush
Sr. himself. But his 1992 campaign refused to follow up on the info she
unearthed, material that could have stopped Bill Clinton cold at the time
and later contributed to his impeachment.
Other so-called Matalin offenses include complaints that she talks to the
press too much, offering too many anonymous quotes that aren't "on
message."
Of course, with Bush's nearly comatose media relations staff, if Matalin
doesn't talk to the press, who will?
WO suggests that the only people who wanted Matalin on Dubya's team in the
first place were Bush Sr. and Cheney's brilliant wife, Lynne, who occupied
the conservative chair on CNN's "Crossfire" before Matalin came to the
network in 1999.
