"On the way, he said we were going to go shopping to get his grandson a baseball glove," said Flammini, 62, Condit's driver for nearly a decade. "When we got to the shopping center, he said, 'You wait here. I need to meet someone.' I said, 'Who?' He said, 'A stewardess.' It was the same stewardess I saw on TV." That flight attendant, Anne Marie Smith, in a Fox News interview first broadcast Monday night, claimed that she had a relationship with Condit. Flammini said that a few months after seeing Smith and Condit meet in the mall, the congressman told him to find another line of work. "I think I knew too much," Flammini said. "I wasn't in the room when they were making love, but she's telling the truth (about the relationship)." Indeed, Flammini knows enough about Condit to be interviewed by the FBI last month as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Chandra Levy. Levy, a 24-year-old Modestan, was last seen April 30 in Washington. Condit's relationship with Levy -- in a statement soon after she disappeared, he called her a "good friend" -- has been a focus of the investigation. Washington, D.C., police still classify the Levy inquiry as a missing person case, not a criminal investigation. Flammini said he met Condit nearly 30 years ago through people who were helping Condit in his run for Ceres City Council -- an election he won. He said he and Condit lifted weights at a gym that Flammini ran in Modesto. He began working as a field representative for Condit in Modesto about 10 years ago, after they had become "hangout buddies," as Flammini put it. Flammini said he never met Levy, since his duties with Condit were all in California. Nor did Condit ever mention Levy to him by name, Flammini said. And he said he does not believe that Condit could have been responsible for her disappearance. "He would never hurt anyone," Flammini said. "He's not physical." Condit is, however, capable of inflicting emotional damage, Flammini said. He said he learned that after last summer's Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. After returning to Ceres, Flammini said, Condit dismissed him during a short telephone call a day or two later. "I still don't understand what I did to upset him," Flammini said. "It's like he has a split personality. He can break you mentally. That's something he has that hurts you. He broke my heart." Flammini said he is not speaking out to hurt Condit. "It's just that it makes me sick to my stomach that a beautiful young girl is missing," Flammini said. "That's one of the reasons I think Gary should open up.
