-Caveat Lector- Whitewater Hero David Hale's Long Ordeal Ends NewsMax.com Monday, July 9, 2001 David Hale is a free man today thanks to NewsMax.com readers and Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who stood firm against pressure from Bill Clinton's many cronies in Arkansas who did not want him to commute Hale's sentence. In 1993 Hale, then an Arkansas businessman, set off the Whitewater investigation by swearing that then-Gov. Clinton pressured him to make an improper loan to help bail out the infamous Whitewater real estate project in which Bill and Hillary Clinton were in partnership with James and Susan McDougal. Hale's testimony sparked pressure from Congress for the appointment of an independent counsel to investigate the Clintons' personal and political finances. The investigation, first headed by independent counsel Robert Fiske and later by Kenneth Starr, began during Clinton's first year as president and continued throughout the eight years of his presidency. Hale's accusations brought down the full power of the Clinton White House and his cronies in the so-called Arkansas mafia. Despite promises from federal prosecutors to protect him from retaliation, Hale ended up being indicted on charges of financial misdeeds and served a 21-month sentence in a federal prison. Ken Starr, who once met Hale at the Little Rock courthouse, assured him that he would not serve jail time in state prison, but later did nothing for him. Though Hale was the only fully cooperating witness in the so-called Whitewater probe, he ended up with one of the most severe sentences - having to serve longer than Clinton pal Webster Hubbell and co-conspirator Jim Guy Tucker, the former governor of Arkansas. After being freed from federal prison, in 1999 Hale was convicted on state charges involving insurance fraud - charges legal observers insisted were retaliation for Hale's stubborn determination to tell the truth about the Clintons no matter what the cost to him. He was sentenced to 21 days in a state prison but he did not begin serving that sentence while his case was appealed. Earlier last month, Gov. Huckabee announced he was planning to grant a commutation to Hale, and initiated a 30-day comment period required by state law. On July 5, thanks largely to NewsMax.com readers who flooded his office with appeals for clemency for Hale, Gov. Huckabee commuted Hale's sentence to time already served. Gov. Huckabee cited Hale's medical condition. Hale, who suffers from a heart condition, survives on life-sustaining medication. NewsMax.com and its editor, Christopher Ruddy, came under harsh criticism from the Arkansas press. Gene Lyons, a Clinton supporter who writes a column for the Arkansas Gazette, insinuated that Gov. Huckabee had received money to grant the clemency. "We're glad it's over," David Bowden, Hale's attorney, told the New York Times. Bowden has always claimed that the prosecution of Hale was in retaliation for his role in the Whitewater case. "It's kind of a political end to a political prosecution," Bowden said. ======================================================= Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF: *Michael Spitzer* <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends ======================================================= <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
