Boy Scout Leader Guilty in State's 'Largest-Ever' Pedophile Case By Mark Mead July 12, 2001 CNSnews.com Correspondent (CNSNews.com) - A former Boy Scout leader, at the center of what prosecutors call Massachusetts' largest ever child molestation case, pleaded guilty this week to 75 of the 130 charges that were brought against him, and faces a possible life sentence in prison. Christopher Reardon, 29, of Northampton, Mass., had initially pleaded not guilty. However, Monday, he admitted to raping eight boys and committing various other crimes of molestation and dissemination of pornography involving 29 boys between the years of 1995 and 2000. Reardon was a youth minister, YMCA swim coach, and Boy Scout leader during that time. Reardon will be sentenced August 17th in Salem Superior Court, following a two-day hearing, August 14th and 15th, at which time the parents of victimized children will be able to take the stand against Reardon. "The judge will listen to anybody who wants to say something," said Steve O'Connell, press secretary of Essex County District Attorney Kevin Burke. "Victims, or probably mostly their parents, will take the stand to talk about the impact this whole case has had on them." "There will also be some supporters, apparently, of Christopher Reardon who will also take the stand on his behalf," O'Connell added. A Salem Superior Court judge will then ";take the bench and impose his sentence", but the district attorney's office has not made any recommendations for a sentence, according to O'Connell. Fifty-five charges against Reardon were dropped, but O'Connell insists there was no deal made between the district attorney and Reardon's lawyers, despite Reardon's decision to plead guilty. "We don't really see a need to pursue these [55 charges],"; O'Connell said. "They were less serious.
