Beyond Globalization: Shaping a Sustainable Global Economy
by Hazel Henderson
Increasingly, each of us is coming face to face with the effects of
globalization. Today, this means that there is an entirely new level of
global interdependence. Most realize the profound impact it has had on
national economies, financial markets, corporations, production,
distribution, trade and the spread of democracy. But far fewer are aware of
the enormous effects that globalization is also having on the environment,
cultural diversity and lifestyle choices.

To add some perspective to the situation, Bucky Fuller wrote in the
introduction to Critical Path that, "humanity is moving ever deeper into
crisis, a crisis without precedent. First, it is a crisis brought about by
cosmic evolution irrevocably intent upon completely transforming
omni-disintegrated humanity from a complex of around-the-world,
remotely-deployed-from-one-another, differently colored, differently
credoed, differently cultured, differently communicating, and differently
competing entities into a completely integrated, comprehensively
inter-considerate, harmonious whole. Second, we are in an unprecedented
crisis because cosmic evolution is also irrevocably intent upon making
omni-integrated humanity omni-successful, able to live sustainingly at an
unprecedentedly higher standard of living for all Earthians."

At issue is not whether globalization is demonstrating that it has the power
and speed to radically alter the prospects for humanity. The big question
is, will the dominant operating paradigm shift rapidly enough from an
ecologically destructive, win-lose proposition to an ecologically
restorative win-win solution? If not, humanity's option for success is in
serious jeopardy. Indeed, time is of the essence!

It is our good fortune to have a new book by Hazel Henderson, the
independent futurist, worldwide syndicated columnist, author, and consultant
on sustainable development. A quick and easy read, Beyond Globalization
provides a concise and visionary summary in 58 pages, of the driving forces,
real problems, positive potentials, and accountabilities that surround this
complex and highly controversial phenomenon. Most important, she outlines in
a brilliantly clear manner a seven level strategy to reshape the global
economy towards an ecologically sustainable win-win world that works for
everyone. The seven levels that are addressed are:

The Global System
The International System
The Nation State
The Corporate System
The Provincial and Local Systems
The Civic Society
The Family-Individual

What's the bottom line according to Henderson? "For every country in the
world to shift to sustainable development would cost $650 billion. That
leaves $350 billion left from the $1 trillion in subsidies to
unsustainability."

The book was commissioned by the New Economics Foundation,
(www.neweconomics.org) whose mission is to "construct a new economy centered
on people and the environment." It also contains a bibliography organized to
correspond with Henderson's seven level strategy, a comprehensive list of
international treaties pointing to a new era of planetary awareness and
cooperation and a useful directory of select periodicals and organizations.
