the second week of February 1999. The average U.S.
price for a gallon of unleaded regular was 92 cents.
What else happened that same week?
Do you remember?
Bill Clinton was acquited of impeachment charges by
the U.S. Senate. The price of gas had fallen for
7 months in a row prior to the impeachment
proceedings.
Within 2 weeks after Clinton was acquitted, the price
of gas was already up by 5 cents. Within 5 months,
the price had shot up more than 50 percent to a
nationwide average of $1.52 per gallon.
Probably just a coincidence huh?
Well....here's another one for you.
Interest rates were also at 30 year lows at the time
of Clinton's acquittal. As soon as the Senate trial
was over, Alan Greenspan and the FED began jacking
up the interest rates.
The plan was to boost the national economy with
low energy prices and low interest rates.
The stock market went up like a rocket and the
economy was really looking good.
So many people took the attitude of:
"Hey just leave Clinton alone. We don't care what
he's done....the market and the economy are great!"
So it was easy for the Senate to let Clinton off.
That was the plan.
It worked!
