Date: Sunday, July 22, 2001 12:59 AM The Warburg Bank's history is important because of the very close involvement in day-to-day financial activities carried on between Max Warburg, the Jewish head of the institution, Jews in Germany, the German government of the era, and the nation's bank. Max Warburg served with honor in the Germany the Army before and during WWI. After WWII, Warburg wrote an autobiography that included his experiences of the era. The text -- of incredibly important historical significance -- was sold to MacMillan & Co., and a commission paid. Unfortunately, it was retracted, and the commission refunded. The manuscript has since 'disappeared.' (Re: Our Crowd, The Great Jewish Families of New York, Stephen Birmingham, 1967, Ch. 46, p. 362~, Harper & Row, NY & London). Max Warburg was quite old at the time, and it is to be presumed that the family forced the retraction. It is anyone's guess what has become of the manuscript. A supportive writer contributes some additional history of the Warburg Bank: ======================= Yes. The bank was "Aryanized" during the Nazi era. The Warburg's picked a German they thought they could trust to run it for them until they could figure out how to get the bank back. After the war there was a long-running battle with Brinckmann to control the bank. By the early 1970's the Brinckmann family was ready to throw in the towel and the Warburg family had total control again after a couple of decades of "partnership".
