THE FOUNDATION

"God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation
be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are a
gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God
is just, and that His justice cannot sleep forever." --Thomas
Jefferson

______--------********O********--------______
INSIGHT

"An open mind, in questions that are not ultimate, is useful. But an
open mind about ultimate foundations either of Theoretical or
Practical Reason is idiocy. If a man's mind is open on these things,
let his mouth at least be shut." --C.S. Lewis

______--------********O********--------______
GOOD NEWS

"I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have
set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose
life, that both you and your descendants may live." (Deuteronomy
30:19) ++ "And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for
yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your
father served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of
the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we
will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15) ++ "Be strong and of good
courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is
with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9) ++ "The Lord is my rock, my
fortress and my deliverer." (2 Samuel 22:2) ++ "Even the youths
shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but
those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall
mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they
shall walk and not faint." (Isaiah 40:30-31) ++ "Not by might nor by
power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts." (Zechariah 4:6) [All
verses NKJV ]

ICTUS IMPRIMIS

"The protective fence that surrounded even agnostics in past centuries
was rooted in the principles of the Ten Commandments and the
philosophy and instructions of the Beatitudes. But we aborted those
principles and now we abort ourselves. Soon, with no controlling moral
authority, we will euthanize the elderly and the handicapped. At each
stage, we will be consoled that we are doing good." --Cal Thomas

______--------********O********--------______
FAMILY

"All too often, those demanding their rights are visible, while those
whose rights may be abridged must be imagined. Fairness demands a
balancing of conflicting rights. To achieve this requires the
recognition that a balance is necessary, plus a bit of imagination.
That is, fairness requires effort, not merely unthinking sympathy for
those who are shown to us on TV. This is especially true when those
who are invisible include children, crime victims, the elderly, and
others less able to ask for their own rights. The invisible are not
insignificant, and they too have rights." --David C. Stolinsky

______--------********O********--------______
CULTURE

"The American culture is journeying through muck and smut, looking for
lower ground, not of necessity but of depravity. Unless we change
course, and soon, our destination is either moral anarchy and social
chaos, or the surrender of all our freedoms to Big Brother in exchange
for his promise to protect us from ourselves." --Linda Bowles

______--------********O********--------______
LIBERTY

"Americans need to be especially on guard against moves against free
speech and their right to keep and bear arms. The purpose of passing
hate-crime legislation is simply to lay the predicate for passing
hate-speech laws. ...Freedom and compulsion are contradictions.
..What the present generation must do is guard against the growing
trend toward more authoritarian government. Government is never
static. Its tendency is always to move toward more power that means
less freedom. But to do that, the present generation must have more
faith in itself than it does in government. You can't have a free
society unless you trust the people." --Charley Reese

OPINION IN BRIEF

"What does global tax reporting have to do with slavery? Think about
it. When people cannot vote with their feet without being taxed by the
U.N. and having chunks of their income remitted to their country of
origin, they do not own themselves. They are the property of their
country of origin and country of residence. The deterioration of
political discourse in the United States and Europe has dulled the
concept of slavery. A slave, like a serf, is a person who does not
work for himself. He works for others, just as you and I do when we
pay income tax. A sales or excise tax is consistent with freedom
because it establishes no claim to a person's labor. If a purchase tax
becomes too onerous, black markets will emerge to curtail government's
greed. Few slavemasters punished a shirking slave as severely as the
IRS punishes a shirking taxpayer. An under-performing slave might
receive a whipping or short rations for a while, but a taxpayer is
robbed not only of his income but also of several years of his life
spent in prison for income-tax evasion. Slavemasters understood that
human labor was too valuable to lock away in a dungeon, but the IRS
regards shirking as slave rebellion and puts it down mercilessly. So
will the OECD and the U.N. Indeed, global reporting will permit
parties in power to pursue political opponents across national
boundaries and to dispossess groups, ethnic or otherwise, that lose
political struggles. Global tax reporting means the demise of
individuals, dissent and freedom, and the rebirth of gold coins in the
mattress as a favored financial institution." --Paul Craig Roberts

EDITORIAL EXEGESIS

"We should not have to return to the Nuremburg Code -- established in
the wake of the Nazis' human experiments to protect people from being
used for research which could cause injury or death -- to know that
doing lethal harm to a fellow human, no matter how small, is wrong.
Blessings to the pope for reminding Mr. Bush that life is not
disposable." --The Washington Times

______--------********O********--------______
THE GIPPER

"Our party must be the party of the individual. It must not sell out
the individual to cater to the group. No greater challenge faces our
society today than ensuring that each one of us can maintain his
dignity and his identity in an increasingly complex, centralized
society." --Ronald Reagan

______--------********O********--------______
GOVERNMENT

"...[O]nly when the intolerant forces of tolerance turn on their own
does the strategy of the authoritarian left become clear: They don't
want a debate -- they just want to shut you down, whether you're the
Scouts or an iconoclastic gay columnist, Dr. Laura or a black
conservative judge. 'Identity politics' is left-wing apartheid -- a
way of dividing the citizenry into competing interest groups, beholden
to a strong central government as an arbiter of largesse." --Mark
Steyn

POLITICAL FUTURES

"RINO Alert! Where is former Republican New Jersey Gov. Christie
Whitman's endorsement of New Jersey Republican gubernatorial nominee
Bret Schundler? According to the Associated Press this weekend, it's
nowhere to be found -- which is the problems principled folks like us
have with liberal Republicans like Whitman and Jim Jeffords and
Lincoln Chafee. When they lose or otherwise don't get their way, they
take their ball and go home. But when THEY are driving the bus, they
expect the rest of US to check OUR principles at the door. In their
book, it's their way or the highway. Bret Schundler won the Republican
nomination for governor fair and square last month; so now it's time
for Whitman to return the favor, stop pouting, suck it up and openly,
publicly and enthusiastically endorse her party's selection. It's the
least she can do." --Republican Liberty Caucus Chairman Chuck Muth

______--------********O********--------______
FOR THE RECORD

"It hurt to lose [my recent race for re-election]. But I'll never
regret my vote for impeachment. It is easy for elected officials to
succumb to the illusion that the greater good is served by their
self-perpetuation in office. Seniority, of course, often brings
promotion and power of a sort. But something larger gets lost. And
here I'm not even talking about integrity or political soul. I'm
really just talking about the ability to lead. The moment a politician
decides that it's more important to be re-elected than to stand his
ground, he becomes weak and ineffective. The willingness to lose
elections is a necessary prerequisite of statesmanship. That, I
believe, is one of the chief and enduring lessons of the Clinton
impeachment trial." --The Honorable James Rogan

"Regarding the Guest Worker Immigration provision, according to a
recent issue of WORLD magazine, 'the late economist Julian Simon found
that an old guest-worker law, the "bracero" program, had an
astonishing impact on illegal immigration from 1956 to 1964, lowering
apprehensions from 500,000 to 100,000. "This is one of the most
conclusive quasi-experiments in social policy that has ever been
conducted..." he wrote'."
Editor's Reply: It's an error of callow research reasoning often
cautioned about: Correlation does not imply causality; coincidence
does not imply causality. That illegal border crossing apprehensions
went down at the time of the old "bracero" program is in no way
"conclusive" of anything, much less an "astonishing impact."

"Sen. (Rhymes with 'Chuck') Schumer has demanded the DoJ make open
access to competitors' software in Microsoft's new Windows XP a
condition for settling its antitrust case with the company. Next thing
you know, the Sociocrats will demand that Burger King also offer
MacDonald's Big Macs on their menu."

"Why are the 2nd Amendment and the Privatization of Social Security an
anathema to Socialists? A well-armed and financially secure populace
is impossible to dictate to or be beholden."

"I felt it was highly inappropriate to [ask] Rush to raise [his
support]. Other than that, we always enjoy your insights and clarity
in a world of muddled thoughts and intellectual laziness."
Editor's Reply: It was a JOKE! We laughed all the way to the bank!

"About making civil servant eunuchs, Mr. Sobran should know that it
would serve us better to have members of Congress neutered. At least
the interns would be safer."

"Missile defense, 'Fortuna Favet Fortibus.' We better get on with it
-- before somebody wants to get it on!"
