It used to be that pet food had to adhere to STRICTER standards than
those required for foods meant for human consumption...

An even bigger problem nowadays than products deemed "unworthy for human
consumption" is the fact that animals not usually found in
slaughterhouses are also being added to pet food...including dead pets
themselves. In other words, Fido's dog food may contain in part the
ground up remains of Fido's littermate, and Fifi's catfood may contain in
part the ground up remains of Fifi's mother...

It's a fallacy that dogs need to be fed a primarily meat diet...in the
wild, canines eat a fair amount of grass and other greens, and what
red meat they DO get is usually more along the lines of small rodents,
which are totally consumed (including skin and bones)...it is a rare
occasion that a wild canine eats just plain red meat, which occurs with
the occasional kill of a large mammal...

They also will eat birds (again, including skin and bones) and it is not
unknown for them to catch fish in shallow streams (and again the whole
fish is consumed, including skin and bones).

Canned dog food is akin to what puppies get fed in the wild, namely the
regurgitated remains of a kill previously consumed by the parent or adult
pack member...it is NOT a diet meant for adult canines.

While Newkirk raises some valid points regarding the safety of the meat
used in most commercial pet foods, anyone else who shares those concerns
would be well advised to consider buying meat from a reputable source
that can assure the cleaniless and safety of the meat...and then the pet
owner could process their own pet food...

> "Meat is a dog's preference,

Oh, I don't know...I never had a dog who wouldn't have been just as
happy, if not happier, with a few tablespoons of peanut butter as with a
hotdog...

I once had a dog who became addicted to my homemade shortbread cookies
(authentic old Scots recipe handed down in my family and given to me by
my father's aunt)...she even knew when the cookies were sealed inside a
ziplock bag, which in turn was put into an old coffee can with a plastic
snapon lid, which in turn was put into the freezer...she would sit for
hours in front of the freezer and whine neurotically and ignore any other
offers of food -- including things like hotdogs and hamburgers and steaks
which we cooked for ourselves -- and would accept nothing but one of
those cookies...

It was only the shortbread cookies (which only contained sweet butter,
flour, and powdered sugar) that did that to her...banana nut cookies and
chocolate chip cookies did not affect her in that manner (not that we
would have given her chocolate chip cookies, as chocolate is poison to
dogs)...

That is a fallacy; wild canines do in fact 'graze', albeit not to the
extent that herbivores do...and they DO eat meat, albeit not to the
extent that representatives of the pet food industry, who obviously have
a stake in the matter, would have the general public believe...
