Why Have Senate Democrats

Slammed The Door In God’s Face?

Washington, DC – "Senate Democrats are apparently not satisfied with demoting
Republicans on Senate Committees. Now they’ve decided to demote God as well,"
said Andrea Lafferty, Executive Director of Traditional Values Coalition
today.

"Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has just exposed an undercurrent of anti-God
bigotry in the U.S. Senate that needs to be exposed," said Lafferty. "The
Senator has challenged his Democrat colleagues on the Senate Judiciary
Committee to explain why they have dropped ‘So help me God,’ from the oaths
administered to nominees who come before the committee for confirmation."

The practice of ending a sworn oath with "So help me God" is a long-standing
American tradition that goes back at least as far as George Washington’s
Inauguration notes Lafferty. "Taking an oath is a solemn and serious
commitment," said Lafferty. "And the person who swears to tell the whole
truth ‘So help me God’ is making a profound moral statement. He is swearing
not only to tell the truth, but to honor God by taking such an oath!"

According to Senator Sessions, it appears that Senator Majority Leader Tom
Daschle (D-SD) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) are apparently instituting
this ban on God in every Senate committee—not just Leahy’s Judiciary
Committee. Our entire legal system is built upon the veracity of those who
swear to tell the truth when questioned under oath. By removing the moral
foundation of the oath, the Senators are undermining our legal system.

Traditional Values Coalition and concerned citizens are deeply concerned that
this removal of "So help me God" from the oath is simply another example of
the prevailing anti-religious bigotry that exists within the Senate Judiciary
Committee.

TVC is urging the U.S. Senate to restore "So help me God" back into the oaths
they administer to those who testify before all Senate committees! "Why are
Daschle and Leahy so fearful that nominees might swear before God to tell the
truth?" asked Lafferty. "Could it be that they fear being put under oath and
swearing to God that they will not lie?"

Senator Sessions has correctly pointed out that Senate Rule 3 requires that
Senators be sworn in by using the words "So help me God." If this oath is
required for Senators, it should also be administered to those who testify
before the Senate. Those who object to the oath can simply affirm that they
will tell the truth.

"We are urging the Senate to restore ‘So help me God’ back into the oath
they administer to nominees," said Lafferty. "If they fail to do this, we
will support legislation to force them to do the right thing. We will also
let their constituents know that they are engaging in anti-religious bigotry
by failing to honor God."
