The History of the Palisades Interstate Park System, published in 1929, makes
a proud boast: "The Palisades Interstate Park of New York and New Jersey is
the most notable example in the United States of interstate cooperation for
the conservation of outstanding scenic features and the promotion of outdoor
recreation."

That was a bold claim more than half a century ago, but in subsequent years
the cooperation has continued unabated, and the park system's scenic and
recreational resources have expanded. This success has been facilitated by an
unbroken history of dedicated commissioners and leaders in the two state
capitals, an extraordinary tradition that has enabled park administrators to
discharge their duties with enthusiasm and commitment.

The park has traversed the 20th century, withstood relentless growth at its
boundaries, encountered unprecedented demands, adapted to rapid changes, and
still managed to maintain the essential integrity of thousands and thousands
of acres of open space. Now we proudly look forward to the Second Century in
the history of the Palisades Interstate Park system.

The park system was born on Christmas Eve, 1900. The quarrying of the cliffs
along the Hudson was the proximate cause, the preservation of vast tracts of
inland space the final effect. Linking the cause and the effect was the
fundamental idea of the public interest. The Palisades Interstate Park was
the concrete realization of a commitment to the greater welfare of all
citizens.

The Palisades Interstate Park Commission is the institution directly charged
with preserving the park’s natural, historic and cultural resources. It is
the Commission that must predict the unpredictable - the independent
variables of the 21st century.
