-Caveat Lector- " 'clearly cross the line into anti-Semitism,' said Wade Henderson, executive director of the group." What about crossing everyday the line of "anti-Palestinism"? Take a look at the same jokers this people play when they look they are in a "no exit street". I can t understand the bullshit this Conference and the UN is. At least 77 of 166 organizations that took part in the U.N. human rights forum in Durban, South Africa - which coincided with the world conference against racism - signed a statement Wednesday rejecting anti-Israel language in the declaration as ``disrespectful, intolerant, and contradictory.'' The forum was dominated by the Middle East conflict, with daily anti-Israel protests by Palestinians. Caricatures of Jews and anti-Semitic pamphlets also were distributed at the gathering. The declaration was passed in a rancorous, chaotic meeting Sunday that Jewish groups said was rife with anti-Semitic hostility. Although the human rights meeting ended Sunday, the fallout began mounting only in recent days. Among those rejecting the declaration was the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the largest and oldest U.S. civil rights association. The discussions at the conference ``clearly cross the line into anti-Semitism,'' said Wade Henderson, executive director of the group. Human rights groups also condemned the way the forum was conducted, describing it as undemocratic and criticizing the voting process as unorganized and confused. One member of the steering committee resigned, citing ``fundamental procedural flaws.'' U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, who organized the ongoing world conference on racism, said the declaration's ``hurtful'' language made it impossible for her to recommend it to the larger U.N. meeting. However, a group of Arab organizations defended the declaration, saying that in rejecting it, Robinson ``rejected the voices of all the victims of racism.'' Pro-Palestinian groups had lobbied many of the groups attending the conference to equate Zionism - the movement to establish and maintain a Jewish state - with racism. Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories was also decried as colonialism. The document brands ``Israel as a racist apartheid state'' and calls for an end to the ``ongoing, Israeli systematic perpetration of racist crimes, including war crimes, acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing.'' For Jewish groups like the Anti-Defamation League, the human rights group's opposition to the declaration may have come to late. ``The conference was over four days ago. How long does it take to recognize hateful language?'' said Stacey Burdett, a spokesman for the ADL. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
