(September 10, 2001 6:02 p.m. EDT) - The mayor of Waterbury, Conn., who is already in jail on federal child sex charges, faces state charges as well after an arrest warrant was issued Monday. The warrant charges Philip Giordano, 38, with six counts each of sexual assault, risk of injury to a minor and conspiracy. Waterbury State's Attorney John Connelly said the warrant had been sent to federal marshals. Giordano, a married father of three, has been in federal custody since his arrest July 26 on charges of using an interstate facility - such as a telephone or computer - to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity and conspiracy. The alleged victims are two female cousins, ages 9 and 11. Giordano, a Republican serving his third, two-year term, agreed in August to surrender the power and duties of mayor, although he will retain the title until his term expires Dec. 31. He ran unsuccessfully last year for the seat held by U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn. Federal authorities learned of the alleged sexual assaults while investigating broader allegations of municipal corruption in Waterbury. Connelly said a second arrest was expected "in the near future." He gave no other details.
