-Caveat Lector- It never ceases to amaze me how little some people understand history and even our current government. Government agencies do not operate in a vacuum and are not unaccountable. They are totally under the auspices of congressional oversight committees and do not just wildly do things of their own volition. We conveniently forget that when in hindsight their actions come into question. At the time, we were quite happy that it was Russia and not us to meet our Waterloo in Afghanistan. After all, we had already had Vietnam. Same thing with Iraq against Iran. Scapegoating into an agency or two lets everybody off the hook. The wrongs of the past are being paid for with the over-regulations of the present. And the American people are the ones being made to pay. But these wrongs are not limited to a few people nor were they done without the knowledge of congress and the president. Often it is even on their orders. And that is a fact they are all too eager to have us forget. It is certainly easier than bearing the responsibility of the actions in the first place.
