Osama leaves Kandahar, moves to rural Afghanistan K J M Varma (PTI) Islamabad, September 16 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Anticipating US strikes, wanted Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden has sneaked out of the Afghan town of Kandahar, along with his wives, children and followers and moved to an undisclosed secret location in Afghanistan. Pakistan daily The News quoting sources in Kandahar said that not a single Arab national was now visible in the city. They said Osama's large family had been shifted to safer places in the countryside. He is reported to have four wives and several children. Even before he became the prime suspect for Tuesday's terrorist attacks in US, Osama lived in secret locations from where he managed to evade round the clock monitoring of his movements by high tech American satellites. The daily said Osama and his men are reported to have moved to one of their hideouts in a remote part of the country. In the past also, the Saudi-born renegade shifted base whenever there was a threat of an American retaliation and moved out of populated areas. According to his aides, the relocation to a more secure rural place was not only necessary for Osama's safety but it also reduced the chances of civilian casualties in case of an attack. Some of the Mujahideen bases from the days of the Afghan Jehad against the Soviet occupation troops during 1979-89 have served as useful hideouts for Osama, Taliban and others in the recent years, it said. The Soviet Army suffered heavy casualties in its bid to capture these bases and had to invariably pullback even if it briefly occupied some of them. Asked if there were secret places where Osama could hide in case of a US attack, the sources said Afghanistan was a large country with mountains, deserts and remote valleys offering safe sanctuaries, it said. The daily said Osama has several hide-outs in different parts of Afghanistan. However, he used to spend most of his time near Kandahar where his wives and children lived. He often visited one of his bases near Jalalabad but it was his training camp in Khost in southern Afghanistan that came under a Tomahawk cruise missile attack by the US on August 20, 1998. Osama survived the attack and his camp remained largely intact.
