government of which it is a part tells it to do. Whatever evil the CIA may
have done was the result of orders from above.

The Chilean event and others (for example, attempts to remove Fidel Castro
from the land of the living, undertaken during the presidency of JFK, rather
more rarely reported because only good came from Camelot) caused the late
Sen. Frank Church to help gut the CIA's Directorate of Operations in the
1970s. What he carelessly left undisturbed then fell afoul of the Carter
administration's hit man, Stansfield Turner. That capability has never been
 replaced. >>

Mr. Clancy had better do a bit more research before he writes this novel.
He's missed a few points. Most Americans don't like our CIA because they've
been doing really heinous things. It seems they okayed the demise of
Americans when it was convenient, were present when Sister Dianna Ortiz was
being raped and tortured, and have a bad record when it comes to drug
running, although they have found themselves innocent on many occasions.
They've been crying ever since they were told they could no longer do wet
work, although one wonders if they ever really stopped. They booted one of
their own who reported to Congress, because if there's anything they don't
want, it's for those for whom they supposedly work to know what they're
really doing. Their observations of the Soviet Union were so far afield that
it is possible that none of them every even visited the place, and they seem
rife with people who were spying for the enemy about whom they had little
suspicion. I will admit that there has been an occasional flash of
brilliance, but for the most part we have been badly served. These people
don't need more money, more people, or more power. They need to use the
brains God gave them for the mission with which they are charged. Prudy
