-Caveat Lector- http://www.portal.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2001/09/25 /nstraw125.xml Iran's media denounce British 'meddling' By Jim Muir in Teheran (Filed: 25/09/2001) THE arrival of Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary, in Teheran last night was denounced by hard-line clerics and media as yet another instance of traditional British meddling in Iran's affairs. "Once again, the bad smell of the British," ran a headline in the hardline Jomhuri-e-Eslami newspaper. Another declared: "The British cannot be trusted." Demonstrators outside the British Embassy yesterday were chanting "Death to America, death to Britain" before police dragged them away. Their sentiments and those in the media reflected an old Persian proverb which says: "If something happens, it is the work of the English." >From the 1906 constitutional revolution and the deposition of Reza Shah in 1941, to the CIA-backed coup which protected British oil interests in 1953 and the 1979 revolution itself, many Iranians have blamed Britain for being behind it. "The revolution could not have happened without British backing," said one. "It served their interest." "Look under a mullah's cloak and you will see 'made in England'," Iranians delight in telling visiting Britons. Some even are suggesting that the deadly suicide attacks on New York and Washington were crafted by the ever-cunning British. "The explosions in America cannot be analysed without taking a look at the behind-the-scenes hands of the British," one commentator was reported to have said last week. "The aim of these explosions was to pull America down from its unique superpower position and to rejuvenate Britain's past rule over the world," he said. Iranian newspapers yesterday pointed out that America also accuses Iran of sponsoring state terrorism. "It should be said that Iran occupies a permanent place on the list officially issued by the United States of the countries which support terrorism," the conservative Kayhan International paper said. "The hue and cry now raised by Washington against terrorism . . . cannot be readily acceptable as long as America supports Israel which is dealing in the most inhumane and barbaric ways with the whole nation of Palestine," it said. The reformist Iran Daily said that although Washington was seeking Iran's military co-operation against Afghanistan, it also wanted Teheran to "revise its Palestinian policy". "It is obvious that the Iranian nation considers spiritual support for Palestinians a fundamental principle. But Iran also draws a clear line between the legitimate struggle of Palestinians for their motherland and fighting terrorism," it said. The English-language Teheran Times commented: "London's diplomacy is doomed to failure as long as it sides with a bullying and belligerent figure like Bush". Hours before he was due in Teheran for the first visit by a British Foreign Secretary since the fall of the Shah 22 years ago, Israeli officials accused Mr Straw of "sticking a knife in Israel's back" by visiting one of its most vehement enemies. He was also criticised by Israel for a "despicable" article he wrote in the Iranian press arguing that anger over the Palestinian situation had helped to breed terrorism. Baton-wielding riot police outside the British embassy in Teheran broke up a demonstration by dozens of Iranian hardliners who chanted: "Death to America, death to Britain". Mr Straw hopes his trip will help secure Iran's support for an international coalition against terrorism, and for strikes against Osama bin Laden and his Afghan hosts. The backing of Iran, whose revolution in 1979 inspired Islamic uprisings around the world, would help dispel the notion that the West planned a "crusade" against Islam. But Mr Straw caused anger in Israel for an article saying: "I understand that one of the factors that helps breed terrorism is the anger which many people in the region feel at events over the years in Palestine." Raanan Gissin, spokesman for the Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, said: "It's despicable and it's simply wrong. I've never seen such a bunch of lies garbled together. "I've no doubt that it's malicious . . . I would expect the foreign minister of Libya or Iran to write such an article, but not the foreign minister of Britain who [should] know about this region." Ephraim Sneh, Israel's transport minister, said that Mr Straw's Teheran visit was "preparing the ground for Iran and its organisations not to be targets . . . but partners. His trip to Teheran, co-ordinated by the Americans is sticking a knife in Israel's back." A Foreign Office statement said that Mr Straw stood by his words. "His record of fighting terrorism speaks for itself. Jack Straw believes that there is never any excuse for terrorism. At the same time there's an obvious need to understand the environment in which terrorism breeds. "That's why the whole of the international community is so concerned to see a lasting peace in the Middle East." 24 September 2001: US atrocity leaves Hamas unmoved 23 September 2001: Straw acts as mediator for US as Iran wavers 22 September 2001: Iran comes in from cold with Straw's visit 21 September 2001: Iran tells Blair it will back coalition 20 September 2001: US seeks approval of Teheran regime Related reports Straw urges Arafat to 'go extra mile' Iran's media denounce British 'meddling' Daily Telegraph: Mr Straw's false logic Middle East Factfile External links Dailies analyse Straw's visit to Tehran [24 Sep '01] - Islamic Republic News Agency News - Foreign & Commonwealth Office Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Islamic Republic of Iran Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tehran Times Iran - CIA World Factbook © Copyright of Telegraph Group Limited 2001 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Forwarded as information only; no endorsement to be presumed + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. section 107, this material is distributed without charge or profit to those who have expressed a prior interest in receiving this type of information for non-profit research and educational purposes only. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes. -Marcel Proust + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + "Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
