Sharon and son facing charges over poll funds
By Ross Dunn, Herald Correspondent in Jerusalem
The Israeli Prime Minister, Mr Ariel Sharon, and his son Omri may
face criminal charges over illegal funding of the election campaign
that brought Mr Sharon to power in February.
The State Attorney, Mrs Edna Arbel, the country's top prosecuting
officer, has recommended that both be placed under criminal
investigation, Justice Ministry officials said.
The final decision is in the hands of the Attorney-General, Mr
Elyakim Rubinstein, who will study the case file sent to him by the
state comptroller, Mr Eliezer Goldberg.
The report by Mr Goldberg contains information of about 5.9 million
shekels ($2.7 million) in donations Mr Sharon received from Annex
Research Inc, a fictitious overseas company run by his son Omri.
Mr Sharon fully co-operated with the investigation and promised to
return any funds that were raised in an inappropriate manner.
But Mr Goldberg said Omri had refused to co-operate with his
investigation out of fear of incriminating himself.
Mr Sharon's son has become controversial, having been delegated by
his father to mediate with the Palestinian leader, Mr Yasser Arafat.
This has angered left-wing MPs, who have pointed out that Omri has
no government position.
"This report reiterates the need for full disclosure" of election
funding, Mr Goldberg said.
"A lot of what goes on today behind the public's back can come out in
the open with the proper legislation."
A political commentator, Nahum Barnea, writing in the Hebrew daily
Yedioth Ahronoth, predicted that the disclosures in the report would
continue to haunt Mr Sharon.
"The state comptroller's report on the financing of Mr Sharon's
campaign will almost certainly lead to a criminal
investigation.
"The investigation, like a chronic headache, will accompany Sharon
and his people waking and sleeping, will poison relations between
them, and will preoccupy their brains much more than the country's
problems."
In another article, a day earlier, Barnea highlighted other internal
strife in the Government. He wrote about the strong tensions between
the Foreign Minister, Mr Shimon Peres, and some of the top military
commanders.
Barnea said that Mr Peres believed that the deputy chief of staff of
the army, Major-General Moshe Ya'alon, wanted to "physically take out
Arafat".
Mr Sharon is on record as saying that Israel will never attempt to
assassinate Mr Arafat.
Mr Peres said such a move would only leave Israel in a worse
position, having to deal with a new Palestinian political leadership
made up of Islamic militants who had vowed to destroy Israel.
"Lets suppose we take him out. What will happen then? Hamas, Islamic
Jihad, Hezbollah will come instead. Arafat accepts Israel's
existence, wants to speak to us, wants to be accepted in the West.
They [the Islamic militant groups] will want to establish a single
state between Iraq and the Mediterranean."
