U.S,: Give us your air space 05oct01 AMERICA asked NATO yesterday for unlimited access to allies' airspace as preparations built up for an expected strike on Afghanistan. It wants the allies to give carte blanche to fly through their airspace as well as for the use of air bases in Europe and NATO fuel pipelines. NATO sources said it was the first time the United States had asked to use the alliance's Cold War-era network of aviation fuel pipelines since the 1991 Gulf War. In another military move, the US Army put 1000 troops from the 10th Mountain Division in New York state on alert for possible movement to Central Asia to join a build-up of US forces near Afghanistan. And in other developments: PRESIDENT George W. Bush unveiled a $A150 billion cash injection to try and save the ailing American economy from recession. NEW York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said he will not press for a third term but repeated his offer to stay on for an extra three months to help repair the city. THE FBI said the hero passengers on the hijacked jet that crashed into a Pennsylvania field had "engaged in a fight for their lives". The possibility of conflict has made the world edgy, and the US and French governments announced measures to build defences against biological attacks. Wall Street relaxed somewhat as shares leapt at the close after Mr Bush unveiled the rescue package for the economy. Mr Bush's bid to soothe economic nerves came after a warning by attorney-general John Ashcroft that any strike by the US military, built up around Afghanistan in a hunt for the prime suspect in the attacks, Osama bin Laden, could provoke reprisals at home. The time window for US-led military action in Afghanistan is narrowing and several indicators point to a possible strike from early next week, experts said. US officials are still requesting help from partners as diverse as Saudi Arabia, Russia, NATO and Uzbekistan but a host of factors, including politicians' travel plans, the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, public opinion, the weather and Muslim holidays all point to a short window of opportunity for action between October 8 and mid-November. Mr Bush's final decision will depend on whether Washington has vital intelligence on the location of bin Laden and his al Qaeda bases. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said he had an inkling of bin Laden's whereabouts, but not an exact location. Mr Rumsfeld landed in Saudi Arabia yesterday and British Prime Minister Tony Blair is expected to arrive in Pakistan today, the only country still recognising the Taliban. Pakistan has sided with the US, helping to further cement Mr Bush's coalition against terrorism. The Taliban appear to have gained some breathing space as it is unlikely Washington will launch a campaign with Mr Blair and Mr Rumsfeld in the region. ================================================================ Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF: *Michael Spitzer* <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends ================================================================ <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
