DUGGER New York Times NEW DELHI, India -- The widely reported midair hijacking of a Boeing 737 jet on its way from Bombay to New Delhi late Wednesday night turned out to be a false alarm, authorities said. Air traffic controllers in the city of Ahmedabad received an anonymous phone call about a hijacking and alerted the pilots of the state-owned Alliance Air jet. The pilots, who immediately locked the cockpit, thought the hijackers were in the passenger cabin, while the passengers thought the hijackers were in the cockpit, Civil Aviation Minister Shanawaz Hussain said. Hussain's clarification came after more than three hours of frantic reports about the supposed hijacking. The incident seemed especially ominous after the Sept. 11 hijackings of airliners in the terror strikes in the United States. The jet landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport at about 1 a.m. today local time. It was diverted to an isolated area and surrounded by a crack team of commandos. At about 2:30 a.m., an Aviation Ministry official said the 52 passengers and crew members were safe and that the cockpit had been sealed to ensure that the hijackers, two men said to speak little English, could not gain access to the jet's controls. But nothing quite added up. Several passengers on board made cell phone calls but reported no signs of hijackers. But if there were no hijackers in the cockpit and none visible in the passenger cabin, where were they? The answer was not long in coming. At around 4 a.m., commandos entered the plane. They found 46 passengers, four attendants and two pilots -- but no hijackers.
