-Caveat Lector- fact check
both Sunni and Shiite follow the Koran, what they disagreed about was the line of succession after Mohammed - one group followed Ali -the Shiites- while the majority elected a caliph who was not a descendent of Mohammed - the Sunnis. the Shiites believe that there is an imamamte - an imam who is descended from Mohammed and Ali, and is in many ways a pope like figure, the Sunnis do not.
