Latest reports are that it was an American Airlines Airbus enroute from JFK to Santo Domingo, that crashed into the Far Rockaways section of Queens (a mostly residential area) shortly after takeoff at approx. 9:15 am EST. Eyewitnesses report parts falling off of the plane before it crashed. The engine plowed into a gas station, which is on fire, the rest of the plane plowed into several blocks of mostly residential buildings -- just a minute ago one of the NYC stations I'm watching reported at least 8 houses on fire.
Authorities are saying that as of this time, there is no evidence showing that this was due to a terrorist incident.
All airports, bridges, and tunnels in NYC are currently closed to civilian traffic.
Interesting note: the crash occured at approx. 9:15 am EST, which would have been 6:15am PST; yet the below post was sent at 4:26 am?
