'Arafat's relations with USA at low point' By Miriam Shaviv JERUSALEM (November 14) - Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's relations with the American administration are at an "all-time low," OC Intelligence Maj.-Gen. Amos Malka told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee yesterday. Malka, who was sent last week by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to meet with senior US officials, said the US no longer believes Arafat's claims that he is fighting terror. The breaking point, he said, came last week when Israel killed Tanzim activist Ataf Abbayat as he drove between Bethlehem and Beit Sahur. "The PA had told anyone willing to listen that he was imprisoned. After the shooting, the US complained that the PA had deceived them," he said. Malka revealed Israel prevented 16 terror attacks since mid-October. At least 10 of them, he claimed, would have led to large numbers of victims. He estimated the US is now becoming "more sympathetic" to Israel when it carries out targeted killings, "as long as the operations are short." According to Malka, Arafat's prestige is also fading among his own people. "Some of Arafat's advisors think that he is maximizing the risks, while minimizing gains. "There is a feeling that as a result of his management, the moment when the Palestinian Authority loses control is drawing nearer." Malka emphasized the criticism is not coming from enough people to force Arafat to adjust his behavior. The only critical Arafat advisor Malka singled out was out Gaza Preventive Security Service chief Muhammad Dahlan, who, he says, wants Arafat to improve the image of the Authority amongst Palestinians by combating corruption. Meanwhile, Malka said Palestinian terrorists are having trouble making bombs and smuggling them into Israel. Instead, the terrorist organizations are using "suicide shooters," where gunmen target Israeli civilians in the expectation that they will lose their life in the operation. Recent examples include the shooting attack on an Egged bus at Jerusalem's French Hill intersection last week; drive-by terrorist near Kibbutz Metzer and in nearby Hadera two weeks ago; and the infiltration of two terrorists into Elei Sinai in the beginning of October, killing 2 and wounding 14. c/s www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
