the point is we wanted both land for farming and settling, as well as the
minerals in places we were not farming... see
there is a distinction there - no one is claiming the Indians had mineral
rights, but that they were dispossessed of their homes for what was under
the landscape as well as above.

the slave trade was the cornerstone of early American property. Glib
comments about puritans ( and note the name they called themselves - it has
meaning) does not change that.

it doesn't say we are currently cruel to minorities ( but try to catch a cab
with dark skin in NY some evening) it says that this is a country that has
not always been squeaky clean in its treatment of people.

rape? who did bill rape? do Clinton's sexual foibles, somehow make violent
crimes ok, I mean as long as they aren't done to Christian white males?? I'm
confused.

I call myself liberal ( but if the political party called liberal can run
candidates like Rudy giulliani et al, then we have very different
definitions of the word) and I have plenty of good things to say about
America. I live here by choice. I know what's great about America - but that
doesn't mean I'm supposed to pretend that there aren't problems here, or
everything we have done is right. We were a nation that used the slave trade
for economic success, on the mainland, and on the islands in the
rum/molasses/sugar trade. We do have a history of oppression against blacks.
women couldn't vote till the 20th century fer chrissakes. We often back
cruel dictators in foreign lands, because it serves some geopolitical
purpose, and their populations be damned.
