Hong Kong, Nov. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Pearson Plc, the biggest educational
publisher, said it formed a venture with China's biggest television
broadcaster to provide education and publishing service to the nation's 350
million television households in March next year.

Pearson Broadband will own 50 percent of the venture, while CTV Media, a
unit of state-owned China Central Television, will hold 40 percent and Cyber
Solutions Ltd., a Beijing-based broadband and telecommunication service
provider, the remaining 10 percent.

Many foreign television networks, including AOL Time Warner Inc. and Hong
Kong-based Television Broadcasts Ltd., have sought alliances with CCTV to
distribute their programs. Pearson's latest venture means programs will be
carried throughout the state-owned network.

The venture, to be called Pearson CTV Media, will produce four television
series aimed at introducing conversational English to Cantonese and Mandarin
speakers. The programs will be supported by print, online and audio course
materials published by Pearson units, including Simon & Schuster and Addison
Wesley Longman.

Two of the TV series will be broadcast on CCTV's channel 5 and its education
and culture channel early next year. The venture will also provide broadband
services, including self-study English language course materials, in
Beijing's complexes.

``From March 2002, CCTV will provide Pearson CTV Media with unprecedented
distribution across its television network, which reaches more than 1
billion viewers every day,'' Pearson said in a release.

Pearson CTV Media also plans to start a travel channel in January and a
six-part television series focusing on China's history, art and culture, the
statement said.
