Barclays in money laundering probe
Barclays Bank has confirmed that the head of its French banking
division has been questioned by police in connection with a vast
money laundering network.
Barclays in London said employees, including the managing
director of Barclays France, Henri-Paul Pelligrino - are assisting
police with their inquiries.
Barclays management held crisis talks
Court officials in Paris said Mr Pelligrino and two other senior
executives were being investigated on suspicion of involvement in a
Franco-Israeli money laundering network.
The allegations centre on Barclays managers failing to carry out
proper controls on suspicious cheques which were sent to Israel in
exchange for cash.
None of the Barclays officials have been charged with any
offences.
Rabbis questioned
Magistrates are looking into a network which between 1996 and
this year allegedly used Jewish associations based in France to
process illegally-acquired money, according to the French news
agency AFP.
It said about 80 people - including six rabbis - are under
investigation.
Anti-money laundering officials are also examining two other banks
in France as part of their investigation.
Barclay's senior managers were in late-night crisis talks on
Monday.
"We take the prevention of money laundering very seriously and will
continue to do all we can to assist," said Jo Wright, a
spokeswoman for the bank in the UK.
"We're trying to piece together the story at this end," she said.
